Vehicle OverviewThis 1968 Porsche 912 Targa is a soft-window example that was completed on November 8, 1967 finished in Polo Red over black leatherette. It was purchased by the current owner in 1998, and a repaint in the original color was performed in 2010. A 5-speed manual transaxle has been added along with 15? Fuchs wheels, and the original flat-four engine was rebuilt about 1,500 miles ago with big-bore pistons, new rod and crank bearings, Weber carburetors, and more. Service records from the last 20 years are included and cover the 2012 engine rebuild, as well as a subsequent dynamometer test. This 912 is now being offered on dealer consignment with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a clear Oregon title in the current owner's name.
A bare-metal repaint was carried out in original Polo Red (6802) in 2010, with PPG base and clear coats used. The seller notes minor imperfections in the paint and a chip in the windshield which is shown in the gallery. A receipt from a previous owner shows floor pan work was conducted in 1991. Some rust is currently noted in the bottom of the smuggler's box and pictured in the gallery below.
15" Fuchs wheels wear Falken Ziex ZE512 tires that were mounted in 2011 and are said to have about 2,500 miles on them. The soft rear window is pictured up close in the gallery below, as is the black targa top. Some surface scratches on the rear window are noted by the seller.
The cabin is trimmed in black leatherette with black carpet, and 3-point seat belts have been installed on the front seats. According to the seller, the positioning of the belt tensioners impedes raising the rear seats. The condition of the front and back seats, as well as dash and other interior trim, can be seen in the photo gallery below. An aftermarket Clarion stereo is fitted in the dash, and the seller notes the horn does not work.
The odometer shows just over 25,500 miles and is said to have rolled over once. The current owner has driven the car about 5,000 miles during 20 years of ownership, and is said to have used it as a fair-weather summer car.
The Type 616/39 flat-four was rebuilt at the end of 2012 about 1,500 miles ago. Work totaled over $5k and included installation of new big-bore 86mm pistons and rings, as well as new rod and main bearings. The crankshaft and camshaft were also reground, and dual Weber carburetors have been fitted in place of the original Solex units.
A dynamometer test was conducted following the rebuild, resulting in 107 horsepower and 112 lb-ft of torque. Engine #1281439 is matches the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. The 5-speed manual transaxle is a non-original unit that was fitted in place of the original 4-speed. The most recent service included an oil change and inspection on July 20, 2018.
A video showing the underside of the car can be seen above, and additional photos of the pans, suspension, and exhaust are included in the photo gallery.
